A washing machine and a belt separation sensing method thereof are provided to quickly and accurately detect whether a belt is separated or not by using a water level sensor installed in the washing machine and using a change of water level while washing the laundry. A washing machine comprises a washing tub, a motor, a belt, a water level sensor(201), a control unit(203), and a display unit(205). The washing tub receives washing water. The motor rotates the washing tub. The belt transmits the driving force of the motor to the washing tub. The water level sensor detects a water level of the washing tub. The control unit detects a change of water level in the washing tub by using signals from the water level sensor and compares the change with a preset standard value to judge separation of the belt. The control unit judges separation of the belt by changing the standard value according to capacity of the washing tub receiving the laundry. The change of the water level is a difference between water levels in driving and stopping the motor. The display unit is for informing a user of separation of the belt from the control unit. |
