PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a stain sensing-use optical fiber, suitable for strain sensing of a large structure. SOLUTION: A PC fiber 5 is used as the stain sensing-use optical fiber, thereby improving the proof-strength to mechanical disturbances, such as bending and nonaxisymmetric stresses for example, which occur, when the PC fiber 5 is laid in accordance with a shape (the shape have a curved line, with a curvature radius of 5 mm) of a composite material 4 or the like being an object to be detected, whereby the original strain detection performance of the optical fiber can be maintained, without lowering its sensibility. Moreover, even if the PC fiber 5 is laid for a long distance, because of these characteristics, transmission losses are small, and stains can be appropriately detected. Furthermore, since the optical fiber itself is strong with respect to deformation, such as bending or the like, the freedom degree of selection for its coating material 6 is improved.
