PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable optical attenuator capable of keeping constant light transmissivity set to a desired value without supplying electric power. SOLUTION: The variable optical attenuator has a base 2, a liquid crystal cell 40, and a pair of collimator lens arrays 50. The liquid crystal cell 40 has two substrates where specified electrodes are formed and spacers, and has smectic liquid crystal in spaces defined by the two substrates and spacers. The light transmissivity of the smectic liquid crystal can be adjusted to the desired value by heating and voltage application. Further, the value of the light transmissivity can be held irrelevantly to an externally applied voltage by stopping the heating. COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT
