This invention provides a filter comprising ash capturing material particles dispersed and incorporated in a catalyst coating layer formed on the surface of each ceramic particle constituting an in-cell partition wall surface or the partition wall and an exhaust gas purification apparatus and an exhaust gas purification method using this filter. Ash separated from a particulate material discharged from an internal combustion engine is captured, and the separated ash is confined within the filter for removal of the particulate material. According to the above constitution, there is no reduction in volume of the filter caused by the deposition of ash, produced by combustion of the particulate material contained in the exhaust gas, within the filter, or clogging of an exhaust gas flow passage (cell), and, further, there is no problem of an increase in pressure loss and deactivation of the catalyst coating layer caused by such unfavorable phenomena.
