<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a data management system and a data management method, allowing a user to easily confirm presence/absence of an access right to data wherein the access right is managed by the data management system by use of an RMS (Rights Management System). <P>SOLUTION: A document server 1100 and a client 1000 manage the data set with the access right by use of a policy management server 1200. It is decided whether or not policy is set to the data in reference to information related to the data held inside the document server 1200, and information of the policy management server issuing the policy is acquired. Next, information about the access right of the user to the data is inquired to the policy management server 1200, and the information about the access right of the user is acquired.
