Disclosed is a retractable awning comprising an awning shaft and a descending rail between which extends an awning fabric. Traction means that are wound onto winding disks in a manner that is common for retractable awnings grip the descending rail. A mechanical limit switch is disposed in the awning housing to detect the retracted position. The final position in the deployed position is determined by monitoring the motor power.
