A Doherty amplifier comprises a main amplifier circuit (72) with a driver stage (76) and a final stage (78) as well as a peak amplifier circuit (74) with a driver stage (80) and a final stage (82). In order to improve the efficiency, in particular for signals having a high peak-to-average power ratio, the input power is unequally divided (84), thus the peak amplifier circuit (74) receives a higher input signal level than the main amplifier circuit (72). Moreover, different sizes have been selected for the driver stages, thus the driver stage (80) of the peak amplifier circuit has a higher power rating than the driver stage (76) of the main amplifier circuit.
