PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for operating a fuel system 100. SOLUTION: The method comprises using a gravity exhausting process for removing fuel from at least part of the fuel system, directing nitrogen into at least part of the fuel system for promoting the removal of air and residual fuel from part of the fuel system to reduce the formation of carbonaceous coagulated particles, removing air and nitrogen from part of the fuel system during a fuel refilling process using a vent process so that part of the fuel system is refilled with the fuel to substantially remove air and nitrogen therefrom, removing air from part of the fuel system refilled using the vent process, and recirculating the fuel in at least part of the fuel system to remove heat from at least part of the fuel system and promote a change of an operating fuel mode.
