PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To eliminate reduction in a voltage margin due to fluctuation in a discharge start voltage and to improve reliability of driving. SOLUTION: A method for driving an AC type surface discharge display device which has an electrode pair of a first main electrode and a second main electrode laid in each row of a matrix and has an address electrode laid in each column is characterized in that: an address preparation period is provided to apply charge forming pulses and charge control pulses, as well as an address period is provided to scan the rows; the charge forming pulses are rendered into positive and applied to the second main electrode as a scan electrode to induce a discharge due to accumulated wall charges between the first and second main electrodes; the charge control pulses are rendered into negative pulses as monotonously decreasing from a reference potential and applied to the second main electrode to induce a minute discharge accompanying reduction of wall charges between the first and second main electrodes; and negative scan pulses the potential of which is lower than the finish voltage of the charge control pulses are successively applied to the second main electrode in the address period.
