The circuit has feed lines (3,4) connected between an inductor (L1) and the capacitance. A control unit (ST2) is provided for driving the switching units (T1-T3) in synchronism with AC voltage of a transducer (2) and is designed such that the unit (T2) is opened after a closed phase for starting the lamp at a point in time. The AC voltage set in a resonant circuit, parasitic capacitance of the unit (T2) and the AC voltage of the converter are added to provide a starting voltage. An independent claim is also included for a method for driving a gas discharge lamp.
