The drive for the mechanism (01) to change a paper roll (02), at a printing press, has at least one electromotor (03) to rotate the roll in its holder (06). The motor is a synchronous motor, with a direct torque transmission to the paper roll through its hollow drive shaft (04) giving a positive and friction grip on the roll by a radial carrier (11) in one piece with the shaft.
