Provided is a head rest device capable of improving reliability of head detection by a change of electrostatic capacitance without complicating the wiring structure. The head rest device (10) includes a head rest rear portion (11) supported by a seat back, and a head rest front portion (12) which can advance and retreat between a fully-closed potion near the head rest rear portion (11) and a fully-open position apart from the head rest rear portion (11). The head rest front portion (12) is moved by an actuator (14). The head rest front portion (12) has a sensor electrode (16a) whose electrostatic capacity is changed when the head of an occupant approaches and an ECU (15) for controlling the actuator (14) to move the head rest front portion (12) and detecting approach of the occupant's head according to the change of the electrostatic capacitance.
