PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polymerization catalyst of a norbornene type monomer. SOLUTION: The polymerization catalyst of a norbornene type monomer is obtained by reacting a halide (A) of at least one type of transition metal selected from the group consisting of groups VIII, IX, and X of the periodic table with a compound (B) having a metallic element selected from the group consisting of B, Al, Ti, Zn, Ge, Sn, and Sb atoms without having a carbon atom that directly binds to the metallic element.
