[Also in Division D1] A top-roll arrangement for drafting apparatus comprises two spaced rolls of balls 3 which run between grooves in a journal 1 and the bore of a cylindrical sleeve 4 forming part of the roll, and guide-rings 5 for the balls, each guide ring on the side of its associated row of balls remote from the other row being located on the side remote from its associated row, e.g. by circlips 7, relatively to the sleeve 4, and being of a thickness selected to give a desired bearing clearance. In the case shown of twin rolls on a common journal, the outer end of each roll has a cover 9 retained in a groove 10, or a rebate, in the sleeve 4. The inner end has a sealing-ring, e.g. 16, elastically retained in a groove 18 in the journal so as to rotate therewith which cooperates with an elastic sealing-ring, e.g. 14, in a groove of the sleeve 4, or with an annular recess in the sleeve to provide sealing-gaps and contact seals at various points. Various configurations of the two sealing-rings are described. Particularly when the roll is a single roll mounted by trunnions at its ends, the cover 9 is replaced by a similar arrangement of sealing-rings. A resilient cot 8 is provided. |
