POINTING GESTURE DETECTING METHOD AND ITS DEVICE

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a pointing gesture detecting method and its device allowing the detection of a pointing gesture whichever direction in a space is pointed. SOLUTION: A detector 10 has a camera personal computer 14 for inputting image data from a video camera 11 arranged at a predetermined point around an examinee H, detecting a face region of the examinee H at each point and estimating a face direction at each point in accordance with the detected face region. A main personal computer 16 detects an absolute front face direction in accordance with the face direction estimated by the camera personal computer 14. The main personal computer 16 computes three-dimensional space positions of the centers of gravity of face and hand regions in the image data picked up by the video camera 11 at two points located on the side of the detected absolute front face direction and estimates a pointing direction in accordance with the three-dimensional space positions of the computed centers of gravity of the face and hand regions.
