In apparatus for separating plastics strands (1), having a driven cutting blade (2), the drive (7) for the blade is an electric motor. Independent claims are included for: (1) an extruder with a whole strand nozzle, in which the obtained strand is cut into sections by a cutting device, where the cutting device consists of separating apparatus as above; and (2) a method for separating plastics strands (1), using a cutting device with a blade perpendicular to and driven through the plastics strand, where the cycle frequency of the sections is more than one per second.
