PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect a prescribed period (first stage, middle stage and late stage) of a REM (Rapid Eye Movement) period from the heart rate of a sleeping person. SOLUTION: The sleeping state detector is provided with a body movement sensor for measuring the body movement of the sleeping person and a circuit unit (30). The circuit unit (30) is provided with a heart rate deriving part (32), a periodic component extraction part (34), a standard deviation calculation part (35), a REM period deriving part (41) and a REM prescribed period detection part (42). The heart rate deriving part (32) derives the heart rate baseline of one minute from the signals of the body movement sensor, and the periodic component extraction part (34) extracts periodic components corresponding to ultradian rhythm from the heart rate baseline. The REM period deriving part (41) derives a sleeping period during which the standard deviation of every 10 minutes of the heart rate baseline calculated by the standard deviation calculation part (35) becomes higher 20% as the REM period, and the REM prescribed period detection part (42) detects the prescribed period of the REM period on the basis of the change of the periodic components.
