A pet door comprising a frame (4) having an aperture, a door flap pivotally mounted in the aperture, a first locking mechanism including a first locking member and a first electrically operable actuator for selectively moving the first locking member between a locked position and an unlocked position, a second locking mechanism including a second locking member and a second electrically operable actuator for selectively moving the second locking member between a locked position and an unlocked position, the first and second locking members being located respectively to engage laterally opposite sides of the door flap when the door flap is in the closed position within the aperture, selectively to permit or prevent opening of the door flap in a respective opening direction, and a control unit (92) which is adapted independently and selectively to operate the first and second locking mechanism.
