The present invention relates to the provision of audio or other media information e.g. during a conference call, or listening to an IVR to a user of a telephone. The present invention provides a method of controlling the provision of media information from a media source (160) to the user (150) of a telephone (100) having a loudspeaker or media transducer (105) for outputting or transducing the voice or media information. The method (200) comprises receiving media information from the media source (205), buffering the received audio information in response to determining a user non-proximity condition (220,225N), transducing the buffered media information in response to determining a user proximity condition (225Y,230). In particular buffering the audio output of a conference call when a proximity sensor (110) detects that the subscriber does not have the telephone next to the ear and playing back the buffered audio signal as soon as the proximity of the ear is sensed.
