<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an input device capable of rapidly switching an input mode without depending too much on the size of a casing of host-side electronic equipment including the input device or without an operator being aware of it. <P>SOLUTION: This input device 1 comprises a first position detection means 2 having a detection part 2a detecting an absolute position of a predetermined operator H within a predetermined area, a second position detection means 3 having a detection part 3a detecting contact or access of the operator H, and an input control means 4 controlling input operation based on an input signal obtained from the first position detection means 2 or the second position detection means 3 or based on a composite input signal obtained by combining input signals obtained from the first position detection means 2 and the second position detection means 3.
