Secret random data (30) is distributed to a plurality of devices (10A, 10B, 10C) to provision the devices with new one-time pad (OTP) data for use in interacting with apparatus (20) holding the same one-time pad data. This distribution is effected by provisioning a first device (10A) with a block of secret random data (30) that is, or will become, available to the apparatus (20). Part of the secret random data (30) is then distributed from the first device (10A) to one or more other devices (10B, 10C) in a hierarchical distribution pattern headed by the first device (10A). Each device (10A), other than those (10B, 10C) at the bottom of the distribution hierarchy, retains part (30, 31) of the secret random data it receives and passes on the remainder. Each device uses that part of the secret random data (30) it has retained to provide the device with new one-time pad data. The secret random data may be generated using quantum key cryptography (QKD).
