PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display element by which successful white display is possible and with high contrast and to provide a method for manufacturing the same. SOLUTION: In the liquid crystal display element having a binder and a liquid crystal layer containing a liquid crystal composition distributed into the binder between a pair of electrodes, the liquid crystal composition contains chiral nematic liquid crystal and a physical gelling agent and the binder is made of gelatin.
