A device (2) for the protection of a water sprinkler head (13) includes a ba se (3) and sides (4) enclosing the head (13), with an open top (5). The base (3) is adapted to slide over the ground, the sides (4) are arcuate, fixed to the base (3) and protrude above the head (13). There are means to releasably clamp said device (2) to a water pipe (7), thi s means also supplies a water path between the pipe (7) and the sprinkler head (13). A water jet from the sprinkler head (13) passes above t he sides (4), through the open top (5). An irrigation system (20) comprises the pipe (7) which can be pulled along the ground behind a vehicle. At regular intervals along the pipe (7) are sprinkler heads (13) within the devices (2). An irrigation method involves moving the irrigation system with a vehicle, either with or without the sprinklers operating.
