PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sol-gel mutual phase transition functional material capable of controlling the sol-gel transition in a minute region and a method of controlling the sol-gel mutual phase transition in a delicate region. SOLUTION: The sol-gel mutual phase transition functional material has an asymmetric azobenzene derivative selected from a compound of the figure (wherein R<SP>1</SP>is an alkyl group, a cycloalkyl group, an aryl group or an aralkyl group; R<SP>2</SP>and R<SP>3</SP>are each hydrogen or a hydrocarbon group; m is 0 or a natural number; n is a natural number of 2 or more; and * is an optically active enantiomer corresponding to the R or S configuration (or the L or D form) of the carbon) or its salt as an active ingredient. The method of controlling the mutual phase transition between sol and gel comprises irradiating the gel or sol derived from a solution obtained by dissolving the above derivative in a solvent with light.
