System and method for landing of lons on a gas/liquid interface

A method of collecting gaseous ions from a mixture of molecules comprising:
converting at least a portion of the molecules into gas phase ions;
separating the ion according to the ions mobility; and
depositing by soft landing the separated ions on one or more surfaces carrying a layer of liquid phase material, the gas phase ions and the liquid phase material forming a gas/liquid interface.
