The invention relates to nanocrystalline HgSe and HgTe obtained from a solution wherein Hg(SR¹)₂ and E(SR²)₂, where E = SE, Te, and R¹, R²= alkyl or aralkyl groups, are mixed in a solvent, at room temperature. Said solvent is, for example, toluene, and the disulfides R¹SSR² as byproducts can be reduced to thiols.
