PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical encoder capable of solving problems of conventional encoder, equipment components of which for correction of errors of output signals due to eccentricity of a rotating disc are complicated and enlarged. SOLUTION: In the optical encoder which is equipped with a diffusive light source 3, a rotating disc 1 fixed to one side of two members rotating relatively, fixed scales 2A and 2B fixed to another side to be arranged between light source 3 and the rotating disk through a spacing, a rotating slit 11 formed on the rotating disc, light source slits 22A and 22B formed on the fixed scales 2A and 2B, an index slit 23B, and light-sensitive elements 4A and 4B, the light source 3 is prepared on a rotating central line of the rotating disc 1 while the light source slits 22A and 22B, the index slits 3A and 23B, and the light-sensitive elements 4A and 4B arrange the light source 3 prepared on a position of point symmetry with respect to the rotating center of rotating disc 1 on an extension line of the center of rotation.
