<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polarizing plate excellent in all of transparency, mechanical strength, antireflection performance, scratch resistance and adhesiveness, and to provide a liquid crystal display device. <P>SOLUTION: The polarizing plate includes a polarizer, a transparent protective layer (A) formed on one surface of the polarizer, a hard coat layer (B) formed on the transparent protective layer (A), a low refractive index layer (C) formed on the hard coat layer, and a transparent protective layer (D) formed on the other surface of the polarizer, and the polarizing plate is characterized in that: the low refractive index layer (C) consists of a hardened film containing a compound having a -O-Si-O- bond in the molecule, formed from a low refractive index layer forming composition that contains a specified silicon compound (I) and/or a copolymer of (I) and fluorine; the transparent protective layer (A) comprises a polyester resin having a haze value of 1.0 or less; and the surface of the layer (A) in the (C) layer side shows H or higher pencil hardness.
