PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To maintain a smooth and variable shift operation of a continuously variable transmission. SOLUTION: The continuously variable transmission comprises a first shaft 12 freely rotatably supported by a housing 10, a second shaft 36 freely rotatably supported by the housing 10, a V-pulley 16 whose groove width is variable and is supported by the first shaft 12, a ring 30 whose outer periphery is supported by contact with the V-pulley 16 on both side faces, and a guide mechanism 40 or the like for moving the ring 30 around the second shaft 36, and surface hardness of the ring 30 is lower than the surface hardness of the V-pulley 16.
