A device for operating an electromagnetic actuator with which a solenoid of the actuator receives a switching current, which generates a magnetic flux which causes an adjustment process of the magnetic armature. The solenoid winding receives through the device during decay of the magnetic flux, a reverse current (65) opposing the direction of the switching current and accelerating the decay of the magnetic flux. An independent claim is included for a method for operating an electromagnetic actuator.
