A direct type backlight device for a liquid crystal module having a liquid crystal panel includes a resin moulded frame 2, a reflective sheet 3, a light diffuser plate 4 and at least one crosspiece (5). The resin molded frame 2 attaches linear light sources in parallel at a plurality of sites spaced apart. The reflective sheet 3 is disposed on one side of the frame 2. The light diffuser plate 4 is disposed on another side of the frame 2. The crosspiece (5) is preferably integrally moulded to the frame 2 between adjacent linear light sources 1, has a light reflecting surface and may have a peaked cross-sectional shape. Light transmitted through the light diffuser plate 4 illuminates the liquid crystal panel. A plurality of spaced apart protrusions (53) may be formed on the crosspiece (5) and contact the light diffuser plate 4 to minimize deflection of the plate 4. |
