Method and apparatus for switching network modes

A method for operating a wireless network comprising a plurality of nodes, the network being operable in a plurality of network modes and being able to switch between different network modes, each network mode representing an operation scheme of the network in which a plurality of network parameters are chosen such that the network as a whole fulfils a desired operation characteristics corresponding to said network mode, wherein said network is capable of switching from the present network mode to a target network mode which fulfils a different desired operation characteristics by using one of a plurality of switching methods, each switching method having different switching characteristics, whereas said method comprises:
selecting the switching method for switching to said target mode such that the switching characteristics of the switching method is in accordance with the desired operation characteristics of the target network mode, and
switching from the present network mode to said target network mode using said selected switching method.
