PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical disk device capable of focusing on a signal surface without reference to whether a false signal is generated. SOLUTION: The optical disk device includes an optical pickup which has an objective and outputs a signal based upon reflected light from an optical disk, a drive unit which moves the objective of the optical pickup relatively to an optical disk surface, and a focus control unit which performs a focus detecting operation to detect a reflected signal on the signal surface of the optical disk from the output signal of the optical pickup when the distance between the objective and optical disk surface is within a predetermined distance range while the drive unit moves the objective relatively to the optical disk surface.
