PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of minimizing damage such as stress on the surface of the electrifying roller, preventing the occurrence of image defect due to the contamination of the electrifying roll, and also, capable of prolonging the lives of the electrifying roll and the photoreceptor. SOLUTION: Regarding the image forming apparatus including the photoreceptor 2, the contact type electrifying roll 3 and an electrifying roll cleaning means 37, the apparatus also includes a discharged charge quantity detecting means 33, a film thickness detecting means 31 for detecting the film thickness of the photoreceptive layer of the photoreceptor 2, an environment detecting means S for detecting temperature and humidity in the apparatus, an electrification control means 30 for controlling bias voltage/current to be applied on the electrifying roll 3, and a contamination judging means 35 for judging the contamination situation of the electrifying roll 3 based on the ambient temperature and humidity, the apply bias voltage/current, the film thickness of the photoreceptor and the discharged charge quantity. The attaching/detaching operation of the electrifying roll 3 is changed and controlled by the electrifying roll cleaning means 37 based on the judgement result by the contamination judging means 35.
