The process involves determining a rate for an exhaust gas flow in an integrated particle sensor (15) from a combustion signal and an air signal, which is detected in an air-intake area (11), during a combustion process. The flow rate is considered during evaluation of particle sensor signals provided by the particle sensor. A cross sensitivity of the particle sensor is considered in comparison with different exhaust gas flows. The sensitivity of the sensor is increased with an increase in the exhaust gas flow. An independent claim is also included for a device for operating a sensor for detecting particles in exhaust gas flow.
