PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a head maintenance device in which ink leakage can be prevented by preventing backflow of ink reaching the opening/shutting mouth of outer air introduction channel even if air suction processing for sucking ink in an ink storage section is started under a state where ink is stored in the ink storage section of a cap covering a recording head, and to provide an ink jet recorder equipped with the head maintenance device. SOLUTION: The ink jet recorder 1 comprises a head maintenance device 29 performing main suction processing for sucking ink from a print head 30 by operating a suction pump 41 while closing an open/close valve 37 for making the interior of a cap 33 communicate with the outside, and air suction processing for sucking and discharging ink remaining in the cap 33 by operating the suction pump 41 while opening the open/close valve 37 wherein ink is prevented from flowing into an opening/shutting mouth 36a by setting the lower end position of the opening/shutting mouth 36a above the upper end position of a lip portion 33c.
