PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for production with which a diphenylalanine compound can industrially and advantageously be obtained in good yield. SOLUTION: A diphenylmethylene halide compound represented by formula (1) is reacted with a malonic diester compound represented by formula (2) in the presence of an organic solvent selected from N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone, N-ethyl-2-pyrrolidone and N,N-dimethylformamide and a base selected from an alkali metal hydride and an alkali metal t-butoxide to provide a diester compound represented by formula (3). The resultant diester compound is then subjected to hydrolysis and decarboxylation to afford the diphenylalanine compound represented by formula (4).
