PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a telephone system having a two-circuit compatible function at a low cost. SOLUTION: The telephone system for communication through a plurality of external telephone circuits 30 comprises master units PA and PB connected to a plurality of telephone circuits, respectively. Both master units shift from a one-circuit mode into two-circuit mode according to external operation. In the two-circuit mode, wireless communication is performed between master units through a specified channel for a master unit. Each of the master units triggers two-circuit compatible function 62A or 62B for communication through a plurality of telephone circuits 30, instead of one-circuit compatible function 61A or 61B in the one-circuit mode for communication through the telephone circuit 30 that is connected to itself. The master unit and a slave unit authenticate each other using ID data on wireless communication by way of different channels. So, by external operation, the master unit functions as a one-circuit compatible model for communication on the telephone circuit 30 connected to itself as well as a plural-circuit compatible model for communication on a plurality of telephone circuits 30.
