The equalizer has a filter control circuit (120) comparing filter coefficients (CFP1-CFPM) stored in a filter circuit (110) with a threshold value and generating filter control signals based on the comparison result. The number of filter coefficients stored in the filter circuit are increased or decreased based on the status of the filter control signals. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) equalization method; (2) filter control circuit; and (3) filter bank control circuit.
