PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance the efficiency of the image reading operation of an image reading apparatus comprising an automatic document feeder. SOLUTION: In the image reading apparatus capable of reading a document by driving a driving body 56 provided with a light source 2, when using an automatic document feeder 40, a document size is detected by a document size detection sensor 41 provided in the automatic document feeder, and images are read by disposing the traveling body 56 at a first position (a) for illuminating the document fed by the automatic document feeder. When not using the automatic document feeder 40, the size of a document is detected by disposing the traveling body 56 at a second position (b) for starting reading the size of the document arranged on contact glass 51. Furthermore, the on/off-control and the luminance control of the pre-lighting of the light source are performed based on the length of a time between the reading of the last time and the reading of this time.
