An electron emission device and a flat display apparatus having the same are provided to improve light emitting uniformity and light emitting efficiency by using an anode electrode in order to accelerate electrons and by using a gate electrode in order to emit the electrons. An anode electrode(80) and a phosphor layer(70) are formed on a first substrate(90). A second substrate(110) is positioned at a predetermined distance from the first substrate. An insulating layer(130) is formed on one side of the second substrate. A cathode electrode(120) is formed on the insulating layer. A gate electrode(140) is formed on the insulating layer. The gate electrode is higher than the cathode electrode. An electron emission layer(150) is formed toward the gate electrode on a lateral surface of the cathode electrode. A spacer(60) is used for maintaining a gap between the first and second substrates.
