A file transmission method of a mobile terminal having an IrDA(Infrared Data Association) module is provided to allow a user to conveniently transmit/receive data by shortening time for transmitting/receiving file to/from an IrDA module. A transmission terminal selects a file to be transmitted through IrDA, prepares its transmission, and transmits a file name and extension information to a reception terminal(S60,S62,S64,S66,S68). The reception terminal compares the file name and the extension information, automatically sets a storage path to a corresponding directory, and transmits a response signal(S70). When the transmission terminal receives the response signal, it transmits the actual file and transmits a transmission complete signal(S72,S74). The reception terminal receives the actual file, stores it in the automatically set directory, and transmits a reception complete signal to the transmission terminal(S76,S78).
