PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce variable speed shock following the change-over of a travel mode. SOLUTION: A continuously variable transmission 1 is mounted on a vehicle in which a plurality of travel modes are selective for changing over a target engine speed in travel modes. A pulley ratio is controlled by a motor 7. A transmission control ECU 17 has a calculation part 23 for outputting the target engine speed as the function of a throttle opening and a vehicle speed, and a motor control value determination part 24 for outputting a control value for the motor 7 in accordance with the target engine speed and an actual engine speed. The motor control value determination part 24 updates a current target engine speed on a stepwise basis when the target engine speed is changed exceeding a scheduled determination value corresponding to the vehicle speed with the selection of the travel mode.
