A method for processing an AR(Alternative Route) call is provided to prevent a call from falling to an infinite loop by processing the call through an AR, and also prevent missing of a call when call processing is not available according as traffic is increased only at a particular route. When an exchange, which initially generates a call, establishes a call route to a certain different exchange, if the initial call generating exchange determines that a call route to its DR(Direct Route) is not possible, it stores its route and requests the corresponding exchange to process an AR call according to AR information set for it(S101-S103). When the initial call generating exchange is requested to process the AR call, it recognizes that the requested AR is identical to the stored route and terminates the corresponding call(S107-S109).
