In a process to manufacture protective or wrapping foil for food or pharmaceutical products, the main functional foil has one or more intermediate layers bearing an agent that modifies the bonding characteristics between the layers. The bonding agent is an element from the Third or Fourth Main Group of the Periodic Table, and/or from the First, Second, Fourth to Eighth Sub Group of the Periodic Table. The bond modification agent is applied by sputtering.
