PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a gas detector capable of preventing the detection delay of a combustible gas in a high-temperature region while suppressing not only the extension of the high-temperature region to the utmost but also an increase in the desensitizing time zone of a hydrogen gas, and a gas detecting method. SOLUTION: A CPU 16 is constituted so as to shorten the predetermined detection time of the hydrogen gas for holding a gas sensor to a low-temperature region when the concentration of the combustible gas detected by the gas sensor set to a high-temperature region exceeds the first threshold value of the combustible gas to control a heating means on the basis of a first drive algorithm for hastening the start timing of the predetermined detection time of the combustible gas for holding the gas sensor to the high-temperature region continued to the shortened detection time of the hydrogen gas. Then, the heating means is controlled by the CPU 16 on the basis of a second drive algorithm for extending the predetermined detection time of the combustible gas for holding the gas sensor to the high-temperature region within a predetermined time range corresponding to the concentration of the combustible gas detected in the predetermined detection time of the gas sensor held to the high-temperature region by the heating means controlled from the first drive algorithm.
