A silica-based material that can be used for adsorbing volatile organic compounds, and an adsorbent used for removing oil components contained in water are provided. As a silica gel having a pore size of 50 nm or less and a surface area of 200 to 2,000 m^2/g prepared by dewatering and cleaning the hydrolyzed material after hydrolyzing, in the presence of a surfactant, 60 to 98 wt.% of an inorganic silica precursor or organic-inorganic hybrid silica precursor selected from the group consisting of (i) alkoxysilyl alkane or alkoxysilyl alkylene or (ii) tetraalkyl orthosilicate having 4 or more alkoxy groups, and alkoxysilyl alkane and alkoxysilyl alkylene having 4 or more alkoxy groups, and 2 to 40 wt.% of organic silane selected from the group consisting of alkoxyalkyl silane, alkoxyalkenyl silane, alkoxyaryl silane and alkoxyaralkyl silane having 1 to 3 alkoxy groups, an adsorbent containing the silica gel as an effective component for removal of oil components contained in water is characterized in that the alkoxy group is an non-constituted alkoxy having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, the alkane or alkylene of the (i) is a non-substituted alkane or alkylene having 1 to 3 carbon atoms, the alkyl and alkenyl of the (ii) are respectively substituted or non-substituted alkyl and alkenyl having 1 to 10 carbon atoms, the aryl is a substituted or non-substituted monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbon, and the aralkyl is a bonded material of a substituted or non-substituted alkyl having 1 to 10 carbon atoms and a substituted or non-substituted monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbon.
