A liquid crystal display(LCD) device and a driving method thereof are provided to enhance the contrast ratio of an LCD panel by dividing LEDs into groups and independently driving the respective groups. An LCD panel(100) includes gate lines, data lines, TFTs(Thin Film Transistors), and pixel electrodes. A gate driver(110) sequentially supplies scan signals to the gate lines. A source driver(120) converts input pixel data into an analog pixel signal, and supplies the analog pixel signal to the data line. A timing controller(130) supplies timing control signals to the gate and source drivers, and supplies the pixel data to the source driver. A backlight unit(160) includes surface emission-type LED(Light Emitting Diode) arrays, which are divided into plural unit regions. The backlight unit illuminates the LCD panel. A brightness controller(150) receives the pixel data from the source driver, and adjusts the brightness of the LED array on respective unit regions according to the pixel data. The brightness controller uses the brightness contribution ratio of adjacent unit regions to a reference unit region in order to adjust the brightness of the LED array.
