Deformation of the valve seat seal (C), occurs in a region enclosed by the sealing groove (2a), which is recessed back from its opening, in a direction at right angles to the seating surface (1b). The projecting part (C1) of the seal does not leave this region, during deformation. Further details of the seal configuration are provided, and of the forces exerted and deformations taking effect during the closure operation, are provided. An independent claim is included for the corresponding valve seat seal.
