PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a conveying device configured to prevent deterioration in picture quality by suppressing variation in driving force load when a recording medium rushes in between rollers. SOLUTION: An image forming apparatus is equipped with an image carrier 102A and a transfer roller 103 that can hold and convey a transfer medium S, and a driving means 108A of displacing the transfer roller 103 between a state wherein its axis is in parallel to the horizontal scanning direction of an image carrier 102A and a state wherein the axis crosses the horizontal scanning direction at a prescribed angle, and the driving means 108A places the transfer roller 103 in the state wherein its axis crosses the horizontal scanning direction at the prescribed angle until the transfer medium S rushes to a hold conveyance position corresponding to the position where the image carrier 102A and transfer roller 103 face each other, and switches the axis of the transfer roller 103 from the state of the intersection with the horizontal scanning direction of the image carrier 102A to the state wherein the axis is in parallel to the horizontal scanning direction in synchronism with the entry into the position where the transfer medium S can be held and conveyed.
